Classic Sugar Cookies

Whether you want to make these as drop cookies, cutouts for frosting, or add other ingredients to manipulate the flavor, THIS recipe is my GO-TO holiday baking recipe. I use it for a bunch of different cookies as you'll see, but it is hands down just so incredibly traditional and delicious as is! Here you will find the Classic Sugar Cookie Recipe for Cutout Cookies and M&M Sugar Cookies. Check out my blog for other adaptations!

Ingredients:

1 Cup Butter (2 Sticks) Softened at Room Temperature

1 Cup Sugar

2 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour (1/2 cup more if making Cutout Cookies)

2 Teaspoons Baking Powder

1 Teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract

1 Egg

1/2 Teaspoon Salt

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. In a large Bowl or a standing mixer with the paddle attachment, Beat the Butter and Sugar on medium until it becomes light and fluffy.

  3. Add the Vanilla Extract and the Egg.

  4. In a separate bowl, Sift the Flour, Baking Powder and Salt together.

  5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until just combined.

  6. Now is when you can add your M&M's to the batter and roll into 1" Balls. Place on cookie sheet covered in Parchment Paper 2" apart.

  7. For cutouts, You can divide the dough into 2 discs; place in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes then roll out on a floured pastry slab or countertop to about 1/4" Thick. Cut into desired shapes.

  8. Bake cookies for 5-7 Minutes and check on them- the drop cookies may take a bit longer until they seem to be golden on the edges just slightly.

  9. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack.

  10. Enjoy!

**IF MAKING CUTOUTS: add the extra 1/2 Cup Flour. The Dough will be on the "drier" side and very stiff, but thats okay and thats what makes these such great cutout cookies that don't spread!

I hope you love, love, LOVE these Cookies as much as I do! Leave your feedback in the comments below and please share your pictures on my social media pages using hashtag #saltsandseasons Thank you! Happy Holidays!
